reflection on a pond

You were an outlet,
like I was yours.

I tried on ideas with you.
You tested other waters,
You swam out deeper
than you’d ever tried before,
and I was proud.

You came back to me,
to my shore,
even though you saw
fire and clouds ahead.

You traveled further inland:
Ate from lush citrus trees,
Drank from surprise riparian streams,
Dreamed in caves made of
boulders left behind.

I let you stay with me for some time.
Enough time to plant your dreams
inside of my own.

And now we’re remembering
our mornings together,
like they were dreams, too.

When I wake these days
I can feel my fists clenching.
I am clinging to those dreams.

They’re full of longing,
Inspired by your smile,
How your gaze holds me.

I wish we’d both let go.
I wish we’d let those dreams dissolve,
like the sugar you’d sweeten my coffee with.

I wish it didn’t take a fire
to stop you from consuming all of me.
